On Maui we are currently focused on the wetlands within the Waipuilani Beach Reserve in Kihei. Our kuleana (responsibility) is to a particular area that is a part of the Kula Kai moku (Hawaiian land division). When we step outside of ownership and into stewardship we contribute and become a part of the true essence of Hawaiʻi. Understanding the history of a place and caring for it creates a sense of belonging.

We host many of our cultural experiences at the beach reserve. We also have a treasure hunt that will walk you through and highlight things that are typical and atypical in a wetlands environment as well as native flora and fauna.

Place based education is a lens into understanding the interconnectedness of the natural systems and hawaiian traditional knowledge that has made Hawaiʻi the most isolated populated island chain in the world.

Growing food and family together is our mission. To us, that means ensuring the health of the natural resources that contribute to and are our food sources. We do this in community as man with land and sea. We use cultural and traditional practices to fulfill our mission and host gatherings for the whole ʻohana to engage and experience.

    Mālama Pledge

    I vow to step lightly

I understand that Hawaiʻi is not an inheritance from past generations, but that it is borrowed from the future generations. Therefore, I will honor and respect Hawaiʻi with a humble heart and a bowed head for I understand that it is a very unique and special place.

    I vow to maintain

I understand that the beauty of Hawaiʻi is a result of the care and aloha its people and traditions have maintained for generations. I will maintain the uniqueness of Hawaiʻi and honor its culture, its people and its traditions.

    I vow to protect

I understand that Hawaiʻi breathes life into those that breathe life into it. I will protect and care for its natural resources so that there is a source for sustenance in perpetuity.

I vow to be a part of & not a part from

I vow to never force change on Hawaiʻi, instead to let the aloha of Hawaiʻi change me. I understand that when Hawaiʻi embraces me that I have become a part of an ʻohana and am considered keiki o ka ʻāina (a child of this land) where I will inherit kuleana (responsibility) to protect and care for it.

Will you join & pledge to Mālama Hawaiʻi with us?
