Waipuilani Beach Reserve

cOASTAL and Wetlands Treasure Hunt

Introduction

Many of the species you'll encounter on our treasure hunt are endemic to Hawaii, meaning they exist nowhere else in the world. Alarmingly, most of them are also endangered. We are dedicated to protecting these natural treasures and restoring their habitats—and we invite you to join us in this vital effort.

Goals & Outcomes

  • Activate connection to the land.
  • Become acquainted with the natural habitat of one of Maui's coastal wetlands.
  • Learn to actively seek and identify native flora and fauna in a wetlands environment.
  • Become aware of what makes a wetland environment well-functioning and healthy and what could improve the condition of this particular wetland.

How to Participate

  • Dress for a walk along the coastline. The weather typically is sunny, and in this particular area, the trade winds begin to blow around 11am.
  • Bring water and stay hydrated.
  • Reference the section below entitled, "Locate & Identify These Coastal & Wetland Treasures" to find the listed plants and animals on the beach reserve.
  • Optional: Bring a friend.
  • Have fun!

Boundaries

Everything in the treasure hunt will be found along the coastline between the VFW & Waipuilani Gulch.
